Vapers should be

A long-term study has shown that e-cigarettes are less harmful than conventional ones

The results of a study published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine (Shahab et al., Nicotine, Carcinogen, and Toxin Exposure in Long-Term E-Cigarette and Nicotine Replacement Therapy Users: A Cross-sectional Study) show that e-cigarettes cause less harm to human health than conventional ones. Scientists, after studying the state of the volunteers' body, found out that in the blood of e-cigarette smokers using these devices as a substitute for conventional ones, less toxic and carcinogenic compounds accumulate within six months than in smokers who smoke regular cigarettes with tobacco.

At the first stage of the study, scientists analyzed the composition of saliva and urine of "professional" smokers – both electronic and conventional cigarettes. In the future, experts compared the composition of these liquids, taking as a basis several key chemical compounds.

The study involved five groups of volunteers (Cancer Research UK, E-cigarettes safer than smoking says long-term study). Group 1 – smokers who have been smoking for a long time. Group 2 – ex-smokers who have not smoked for about 6 months. Group 3 – smokers or users of NRT (nicotine replacement therapy) who smoke electronic cigarettes, but do not smoke regular cigarettes. Group 4 and 5 are smokers who smoke both regular cigarettes and electronic cigarettes, plus smokers who use NRT.

Nicotine replacement therapy is a method of delivering nicotine to the body without using tobacco. It is used to reduce withdrawal syndromes (or withdrawal syndrome) caused by quitting smoking or chewing tobacco.

As it turned out, the blood of former smokers who smoked regular cigarettes for several years, and then switched to electronic cigarettes or nicotine replacement therapy, significantly less carcinogens and toxins than in the blood of smokers who never gave up regular cigarettes. We are talking about substances such as acrolein, acrylamide, 1,3-butadiene and ethylene oxide. At the same time, the study participants who used e–cigarettes and nicotine replacement therapy and continued to smoke regular cigarettes showed no differences from smokers - the level of toxins and carcinogens in their blood remained approximately the same as before the use of cigarette analogues.

The head of the study Lion Shahab (Lion Shahab) stated the following: "Our study confirms the point of view that e-cigarettes and NRT are much safer than smoking. Presumably, long-term use of cigarette substitutes is not too dangerous for humans."

"We have already shown that the level of toxic chemical compounds in the body of e-cigarette smokers is significantly lower than previously assumed. This means that doubts about the safety of electronic cigarettes are in vain," says Shahab. The scientist also reported that the amount of nicotine that enters the body of vapers is significantly lower than the nicotine obtained by smokers of traditional cigarettes. The authors of the study believe that e-cigarettes and NRT may be an outlet for people who want to quit smoking.

Alison Cox, the head of the British Cancer Research organization, says that about a third of the deaths of tobacco cigarette smokers are due to cancer. It is possible to reduce the mortality of smokers if you convince them to gradually switch to alternatives like electronic cigarettes or NRT or quit smoking.

E-cigarettes can also be dangerous. Just not because when they are smoked, harmful substances that disrupt metabolism enter the human body. But because in some cases the battery of such devices explodes. This happens especially often when using inexpensive devices or when customizing electronic cigarettes. In the environment of vapers, this method is often used to increase the efficiency of the device, as a result of which more steam can be obtained.

However, for such work it is necessary to have experience and knowledge in electrical engineering and electronics. If you do something without much understanding of the process, anything can happen. It is not uncommon for an explosion of an electronic cigarette in the hand or in the mouth of a smoker to lead to extremely dangerous consequences. These are, for example, injuries or even death. So, in 2016, a Muscovite was seriously injured after an explosion of an electronic cigarette. The vape battery exploded right in his pants pocket. The result is a fourth–degree burn and a thigh stitched with fragments of the device.
