A stem cell bank has opened in Orenburg

The bank of blood cells, for the creation of which almost 40 million rubles were spent, opened on Thursday in Orenburg at the regional blood transfusion station, a representative of the press service of the regional government told RIA Novosti.

"The opening of the Blood Cell Bank will provide a unique opportunity to introduce cellular technologies into the clinical practice of the Orenburg Region, including in severe oncological diseases. 39 million rubles were allocated from the regional budget for the opening of the bank," the agency interlocutor said.

According to him, there are currently only four stem cell banks in Russia – in Moscow, Samara and Kazan, and now in Orenburg.

The opening of the blood cell bank on Thursday was attended by the Governor of the Orenburg Region Alexey Chernyshev and the director of the Scientific Center of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology, Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences Gennady Sukhoi.

According to RIA Novosti in the Ministry of Health of the region, the blood cell bank at the state healthcare institution "Orenburg Regional Blood Transfusion Station" is a stem cell bank – it will isolate and store umbilical cord blood stem cells and peripheral blood stem cells at an ultra-low temperature for many years.

"The blood cell bank will store not the umbilical cord blood itself, but the stem cells isolated from it. The collection of cells is carried out by an obstetrician. The process itself takes place without physical contact with the mother or baby, quickly and painlessly. After the birth of the baby, the obstetrician squeezes and cuts the umbilical cord, then the volume of blood remaining in the umbilical cord and placenta is collected from the umbilical cord separated from the newborn into a sterile system. The collected blood is placed in a container for transportation, in which it is protected from vibrations, shocks, sudden temperature changes and is delivered safely to the blood cell bank. Here the newborn's cells can be stored until they are needed in his interests or in the interests of his family," the representative of the ministry explained.

He recalled that the prospects for the use of stem cells are very wide – these are cardiology, autoimmune diseases, diabetes mellitus, dentistry, ophthalmology, plastic surgery and other areas of modern medicine.
