A stethoscope with intelligence

A "smart" stethoscope is able to diagnose pneumonia by itself

Despite all the successes of antibiotic treatment, pneumonia still remains a dangerous disease, especially in children, claiming more lives than HIV and malaria combined. This is largely due to the low level of medicine available to many patients in developing countries, primarily X–ray, which remains the main tool for diagnosing pneumonia.

A "smart" stethoscope developed by engineers of the American Johns Hopkins University can solve the problem and save many lives. In fact, stethoscopes have changed little in two centuries of use. Being one of the most common medical instruments, it still requires a quiet environment and medical experience to hear disturbing noises.

That is why scientists decided to supplement it with complex algorithms and artificial intelligence that independently analyze acoustic information from a stethoscope, isolate the desired signal from the noise and analyze for signs of pneumonia. According to the developers, the "smart" stethoscope successfully recognizes the disease in 87 percent of cases. The working prototype of the instrument is equipped with a small LCD display that displays the diagnosis.
