Aspirin will help with cancer, but not for everyone

The benefits of daily use of aspirin are named

Daily use of aspirin can increase the survival rate of cancer patients by up to 78 percent, researchers at the University of California at San Francisco have found. The results of their work are published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine. The scientists hoped to identify a pattern between the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and increased survival of cancer patients with the mutated PIK3CA gene.

For the study, experts used data from 266 patients with a five–year survival rate for head and neck cancer - malignant tumors can occur in more than 30 areas of these parts of the body, including the mouth and throat. In 75 people, a mutated PIK3CA gene was found in the tumor.

It turned out that in patients with a mutated gene who regularly took aspirin for six months, the chances of five-year survival increased from 25 to 78 percent. However, the researchers did not find a dependence of increased survival on regular use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in patients in whom the PIK3CA gene was not mutated.

Experts hope that similar studies will be conducted in the future for tumors that occur in other parts of the body.
