Cheaper and less toxic

PSNIU is developing a new generation antibiotic

Young scientist of Perm University Sergey Shipilovskikh received a grant from the Russian Science Foundation for the development of new classes of antibiotics based on pyrrol carboxylic acid derivatives. The drug will be able to selectively and accurately affect bacteria, will be cheaper to produce and less toxic compared to analogues.

"Despite the large number of drugs available, researchers continue to look for new and more highly effective compounds. This is probably one of the highest priorities in medicine. Bacteria, like fungi and viruses, change under the influence of medication, so resistance to antimicrobial drugs is formed. Pathogens that have acquired such resistance are called "super microbes". To combat them, new types of antibiotics are needed," says Sergey Shipilovskikh, senior researcher at the Laboratory of Asymmetric Synthesis of PSNIU, Candidate of Chemical Sciences.

Substances developed at Perm University belong to the fourth class of toxicity, the safest in the CIS. For example, one of the most popular antibiotics in Russia – amoxicillin – belongs to the third class of toxicity, so probiotics are prescribed together with it to restore the microflora. In the future, new antibiotics may become available for distribution in Europe and the USA.

PSNIU scientists have identified seven main directions of modifications of the structure of the active substance. The researcher wants to bring out a convenient and practical drug for storage. One of the possible modifications is a powder that has no special requirements for transportation and can be stored much longer than a suspension. The researcher plans to reduce the cost of the new drug by using commercially available raw materials of large-scale production.

The RPF grant is designed for two years and amounts to three million rubles. Sergey Shipilovskikh plans to conduct preclinical trials of the antibiotic for the second year of research. According to the results of two competitions of the Russian Science Foundation, three more projects were supported at Perm University in 2018. Among them are studies of compounds against tuberculosis, analysis of sociolinguistic variation and stability of two–dimensional currents.
