"DNA identification": getting started

Scientists of institutes subordinate to the FANO of Russia, together with colleagues from Belarus, are implementing a unique project in the field of DNA identification

FANO Press Center

The Federal Agency of Scientific Organizations and the Institute of General Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IOGen) have signed a state contract to carry out work on the scientific and technical program of the Union State "Development of innovative genogeographic and genomic technologies for identification of personality and individual characteristics of a person based on the study of the gene pools of the regions of the Union State" ("DNA identification").

The research will be conducted by the Institute of General Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences together with the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. In addition, other scientific institutes subordinate to the FANO of Russia, the Research Institute of Medical Genetics of the Tomsk National Research Medical Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Medical and Genetic Research Center, the Institute of Biochemistry and Genetics of the Ufa Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the SB RAS, etc. have already joined the implementation of this project.

The program is designed for five years (2017-2021) and provides for the development of new methods of DNA research. In particular, its implementation will solve a fundamental scientific task - to characterize in detail the gene pool of the population of Belarus and Russia. With its help, it will be possible not only to determine the region of origin of a person, but also the features of his appearance, age by lifetime DNA modifications (by methylation), the study of the genetic characteristics of people with different psycho-emotional status, the forecast of changes in the genetic characteristics of the population under the influence of demographic processes. One of the important points of the program is the creation of test kits for the implementation of the genetic technologies being developed.

The results of the research can be used not only in criminology and medicine, but will also be useful to historians, since DNA analysis of ancient samples with an age of tens of thousands of years is possible.
