A new drug against hepatitis A and measles has been approved in the USA – it starts working immediately and is very effective for people with reduced immunity. The immunoglobulin-based drug copes with several infections at once, even if a person has not been pre-vaccinated.

The drug was named GamaSTAN® and is the only drug based on immunoglobulin, which is available in the United States to protect against hepatitis A virus and measles after infection, writes Forbes. In addition, the drug is recommended as a prophylaxis after contact with people infected with hepatitis A, including children under one year old, as well as patients with cancer and chronic kidney and liver diseases.

The drug is fundamentally different from vaccination. A preventive vaccine takes several weeks for the immune system to start producing protective antibodies to fight the virus. Immunoglobulin-based drugs, including GamaSTAN®, offer immediate protection.

The problem of hepatitis infection is acute in many countries of the world. In 2016, the World Health Organization adopted the first global strategy on viral hepatitis for 2016-2021, which describes specific programs for the elimination of viral hepatitis. The new drug, scientists hope, will also help to contribute and reduce the severe consequences of infection.

Immunoglobulin stimulates the immune system, helps prevent infections, as well as reduce their severity.

In addition to hepatitis A and measles, GamaSTAN® is also approved for the treatment of rubella and chickenpox.
