Inject allergens into the lymph nodes

Immunologists have proposed introducing allergens – molecules that cause a hypersensitivity reaction directly into the lymph nodes – the places of concentration of cells responsible for the development of immune reactions. Thomas Kuenig and co-authors of the publication in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences announced the completion of the first stage of a clinical trial of a new method.

Until today, one of the most effective methods of combating pollen allergy was a three-year course of 54 intravenous injections of allergen, which was often discontinued by patients due to severe side effects. Although the mechanism of action of such "prevention" is not exactly known, it is believed that when an allergen is introduced into the blood, antibodies bind, which, if the allergen hits the nasal mucosa, would cause a runny nose, tears, urticaria and even edema known to millions of people.

Kuning tried to inject the allergen not into the blood but directly into the lymph nodes, reducing the number of injections to 3 with an interval of 8 weeks. Compared with the control group who received the traditional two-year course of intravenous administration, patients from the experimental group not only completed the course, but also felt much better.

Of course, the introduction of a new method will still require additional safety tests, but taking into account the fact that the allergens introduced have long been used in clinical practice, we can expect that by spring and the peak of allergy, a new method will appear in Russia, at least in the status of a clinical study.
