Institute of Biomedical Systems and Technologies

Ilona Zhabenko, SPbPU

The structure of the Polytechnic University has expanded: the Academic Council of SPbPU decided to create a new institute – the Institute of Biomedical Systems and Technologies. A large-scale scientific and educational project will be implemented jointly with the Almazov National Medical Research Center (Almazov National Medical Research Center), and the director of the Institute and its scientific supervisor is the General Director of the Center, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation Evgeny Vladimirovich SHLYAKHTO. Participants and partners of the educational project told journalists about the already created developments and plans for the future on November 16 at the TASS press center.

The Institute of Biomedical Systems and Technologies will be developed within the framework of the Translational Medicine scientific and educational cluster established in 2015. Then the cluster included 5 universities – SPbPU, P.F. Lesgaft NSU, ITMO University, SPbGETU "LETI" and SPHFA of the Ministry of Health of Russia, as well as small innovative companies and business partners. The central link was the NMIC named after V.A. Almazov. "By creating this cluster, we were guided by the main task – to combine all the progressive things that exist in universities and use it for the innovative development of biomedical research," E.V. SHLYAKHTO commented on the creation of the cluster at a press conference. "We want to introduce all the best and new things that are in science today into the waiting room of a practicing doctor."

The training strategy at the Institute of Biomedical Systems and Technologies will be implemented by the Translational Medicine cluster. As Sergey Vladimirovich explained, "together we will train specialists who will respond to global challenges in 3-7 years." Due to the fact that medical practice is becoming increasingly complex, the choice of treatment is based not only and not so much on clinical data, but on the study of molecular, genetic and epigenetic mechanisms. "I hope this high idea, and we are looking beyond the horizon, will allow us to implement a pilot project to train specialists based on new biomedical research," stressed E.V. SHLYAKHTO. It is worth noting that just the day before, on November 15, Russian President Vladimir PUTIN awarded Academician E.V. SHLYAKHTO the Order of Merit for the Fatherland of the IV degree for his great contribution to the development of healthcare, medical science and many years of conscientious work.

As the rector of SPbPU, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences A.I. RUDSKOY admitted, without the initiative of Evgeny Vladimirovich and the Almazov Center, this educational project would be difficult to implement. "A doctor of the future should have a number of knowledge and skills, which, unfortunately, are not provided for by standard educational programs of medical universities," A.I. RUDSKOY explained. According to the rector of SPbPU, a doctor of any profile should be able to work with digital technologies, be able to use complex devices, and most importantly, "should understand what the frontier of scientific thought is at the moment and work in this direction."

The design of the program of the Institute of Biomedical Systems and Technologies was carried out for two years within the framework of the 5-100 Project. Among the specializations that graduates will be able to receive upon graduation are molecular design and bioinformatics, biomedical engineering and materials, nuclear and quantum medicine, cellular and regenerative medicine, neurobionics, medical robotics. These are the advanced technologies that medicine needs today. Doctors of the new formation will be trained at the Polytechnic University according to master's degree programs, admission will begin in the summer of 2018. It is planned to accept 10-15 students with basic medical education, who will receive "super-scientific" education at the site of SPbPU and partners.

The press conference was held on the last day of the Second International Forum "Russian-Chinese Biomedical Cooperation", where academicians, chief physicians, directors of scientific centers of the two countries discussed and demonstrated the latest achievements in the field of biotechnology. For example, a unique diagnostic and therapeutic complex for the removal of benign and malignant neoplasms by a non-invasive method was presented at the exhibition at the Polytechnic University. "When Albert Akramovich SUFIANOV, the head physician of the Federal Center for Neurosurgery, saw this installation," A.I. RUDSKOY shared, "he immediately began to draw on a piece of paper what kind of installation he needed in order to affect the neoplasm in the brain at the initial stage in exactly the same way, without opening the cranium."

The director of the St. Petersburg Clinical Scientific and Practical Center for Specialized Types of Medical Care, known as the oncocenter, V.M. MOISEENKO, told about cooperation with the Polytechnic University at a press conference. So, in the near future, a patient with a tumor will undergo surgery for prosthetics of the lower jaw, the prosthesis will be printed on a 3D printer and designed in accordance with the anatomical features of this particular patient. "This will give the best functional and cosmetic result," explained V.M. MOISEENKO. In the field of additive technologies, Polytech also cooperates with the R.R. Vreden Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics: 2 years ago, a titanium hip prosthesis was grown on a 3D printer at SPbPU. And a working model of a prosthetic arm was made for a patient of the G.I. Turner Research Children's Orthopedic Institute.

Together with the St. Petersburg State Chemical and Pharmaceutical Academy (SPHFA) Polytech conducts diagnostics of promising drugs. As the rector of the Academy I.A. NARKEVICH explained, when developing drugs for the treatment of neurotrauma, the first assessment of the main active substances was carried out by the Laboratory of Molecular Neurodegeneration of our university, and based on the results obtained, the academy staff conducted preclinical studies of the drug.

The head of the SPbPU Representative Office in Shanghai Su JING and the president of the pharmaceutical corporation Kannaer (Zilin, China) spoke about cooperation between Russia and China in the field of biomedicine at a press conference Song ZHIGO.

The speakers came to the conclusion that real life is ahead of education, so it is necessary to make education meet the challenges that exist in medical practice – this concerns working with equipment, the use of new technologies, bioinformatics, etc. And solving complex laboratory and diagnostic problems is impossible without technical specialists. The Institute of Biomedical Systems and Technologies of SPbPU should become a pilot platform in Russia for the promotion of biomedical and biotechnical technologies. "Today it is mathematicians, chemists, and physicists who generate the absolute majority of medical innovations," concluded E.V. SHLYAKHTO.
