On November 5 , 2019 , the academician passed away Konstantin Georgievich Scriabin is the initiator of the creation and Scientific Director of the Scientific Center "Fundamentals of Biotechnology" of the Russian Academy of Sciences, an outstanding scientist, the author of many discoveries in the field of molecular biology, a brilliant organizer who actively participated in the selection and implementation of priorities of the state scientific and technical policy.

K.G. Scriabin is a graduate of the Faculty of Biology of Lomonosov Moscow State University, a student of Academician A.A. Baev, an outstanding molecular biologist, the author of the first works in our country to determine the primary structure of nucleic acids. In 1976-1977 K.G. Scriabin was an intern in the laboratory of the future Nobel laureate Walter Gilbert (Harvard University, USA), the inventor of the DNA sequencing method, known today as the Maxham-Gilbert method. In many ways, mastering these new methods for Russian science allowed K.G. Scriabin to become one of the organizers of the work on sequencing of DNA nucleotide sequences in our country in the 1970s and 80s. These works have been widely recognized in our country and abroad, have been noted The Lenin Komsomol Prize (1980) and the USSR State Prize (1983). Subsequently, these results became the basis of K.G. Scriabin's fundamental research in the field of structural and functional genomics, studying the relationship between the organization of genetic material and its expression.

K.G. Scriabin is the founder of a new academic institute – the Bioengineering Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, of which he has been the permanent director since 1991. The Center's activities were aimed not only at research in the field of molecular biology and genetic engineering, but also at the practical implementation of the results obtained in biotechnology and medicine. In a relatively short period of time, a unique scientific team of scientists of various specialties was formed: geneticists, microbiologists, molecular biologists, biochemists, specialists in the field of bioinformatics. Under the leadership of K.G. Scriabin, for the first time in our country, domestic potato varieties resistant to herbicides, viruses and insect pests were created, methods for diagnosing plant diseases were developed.

Since the mid-2000s, K.G. Scriabin has again focused on research in the field of genomics, which was due to the development of high-performance DNA sequencing methods in these years. Under the leadership of K.G. Scriabin, projects were carried out to study the genetic foundations of kidney cancer development, to decipher the genomes of potatoes and wheat; genomes of various microorganisms, including industrial strains-producers. K.G. Scriabin is the organizer of large–scale characterization of genetic polymorphism of the population of the Russian Federation, as a result of which genetic maps of the country's population were compiled. These studies contribute to the establishment of relationships between predisposition to various diseases and individual DNA polymorphisms and provide the possibility of compiling an individual "genetic passport" of a person. For outstanding work in the field of genomics and genoinformatics, K.G. Scriabin was awarded in 2019 Awards of the Russian Academy of Sciences named after A.A. Baev.

Outstanding scientific achievements of K.G. Scriabin were highly appreciated by the world scientific community: he was elected an associate member of the European Molecular Biological Organization (EMBO, 1997), academician of RASKHN (1999) and RAS (2008). K.G. Scriabin was awarded the Orders "For Services to the Fatherland" III (2019) and IV degrees (2008), the Order of Friendship of Peoples (1982) and the Medal of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, II degree (1999), he is an officer of the Order of Academic Palms of France (2006). K.G. Scriabin conducted extensive scientific, organizational and teaching work, was a member of the Council for more than 10 years Under the President of the Russian Federation for Science and Education, he headed the Department of Biotechnology of the Faculty of Biology of Lomonosov Moscow State University.

In 2015, on the initiative of K.G. Scriabin, on the basis of the A.N. Bach Institute of Biochemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the S.N. Vinogradsky Institute of Microbiology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Bioengineering Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the country's largest scientific institute in the field of microbiology and biotechnology was established – the Federal Research Center "Fundamentals of Biotechnology" of the Russian Academy of Sciences, scientific the head of which he was until recently.

The staff of the Center, students and friends will keep a bright memory of Konstantin Georgievich – an outstanding scientist with a world name, the leader of Russian biotechnology, Creator, Teacher and a Great man.
