A pharmaceutical company from the USA promises to rid humanity of nicotine addiction with the help of a vaccine.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (USA) has awarded Nabi Biopharmaceuticals of Rockville a $10 million grant for the final stage of the development of an innovative vaccine against nicotine addiction. The remedy that should free people from attachment to tobacco smoking has been named NicVAX, and its first prototypes will become available to the US population at the end of 2010.

According to the report of the project manager, Dr. Nora D. Volkow, the principle of operation of the new vaccine is based on the start of the immune system, at the moment when the substances contained in tobacco enter the human body. According to her, the antibodies that make up the vaccine are able to completely block nicotine molecules and prevent its penetration into the brain of a smoker. The effect of taking NicVAX persists for six to twelve months, and this period is quite enough to completely get rid of nicotine addiction.

Nora Volkova also stressed that if the NicVAX tests are successful, then humanity will be able to get rid of the addiction, which annually causes the death of 400 thousand Americans.
