Scientists of the Russian nuclear industry were awarded the prize of the Government of the Russian Federation for the development and implementation of import-substituting methods for the treatment of oncological diseases, as well as for work in the field of promising nuclear power reactors, which will be used to develop technologies necessary for the development of nuclear energy of the future.

The Government Award for the development, production and introduction of domestic radioactive sources for contact radiation therapy in oncology was awarded to specialists of the Herzen Moscow Research Oncological Institute, a branch of the National Medical Research Radiological Center of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, the Tsyba Medical Radiological Research Center, the Russian Scientific Center for Radiology and the Rosatom enterprises - the Leipunsky Institute of Physics and Energy and the Scientific-Research Institute of Technical Physics and Automation (NIITFA, Moscow).

In Russia, under the auspices of Rosatom, a project was previously launched to produce fully Russian micro sources with the isotope iodine-125 (I-125) for brachytherapy operations (interstitial radiation therapy, a modern high-tech and minimally invasive method of cancer treatment). Within the framework of this project, I-125 is being developed in The Research Institute of Nuclear Reactors (Dimitrovgrad, Ulyanovsk region), and micro sources with an isotope are manufactured in the FEI.

The foundations of the project to create these micro sources were laid more than 10 years ago, and as a result of its implementation, a high-tech domestic product at the level of world analogues with significant export potential was obtained. The introduction of Russian sources, the cost of which is several times lower than foreign analogues, significantly reduces the cost of oncosurgical operations.

The first operation on brachytherapy of prostate cancer using these micro sources took place in the fall of 2015 at the Tsyba Medical Radiological Research Center in Obninsk.

In 2016, the head of the award-winning team, Director of the Herzen Institute, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Andrey Kaprin told RIA Novosti that Russian oncologists note the high quality of domestic micro sources with I-125. According to him, the micro sources produced by Rosatom are in no way inferior to foreign analogues.
