China to use DNA tests to select athletes for the 2022 Olympics

Eurosport

The Chinese government announced that athletes will be selected according to a special genetic standard to participate in the 2022 Winter Olympics. Candidates for participation in the Olympiad will undergo genome sequencing, a process that will determine the complete and unique profile of human DNA.

"A full genome definition will show speed, endurance and explosive power. There will be at least 300 athletes in each group," reads the document prepared jointly by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and the organizing committee of the Olympics and Paralympics–2022.

The genetic examination, study and analysis will be undertaken by the General Sports Administration of China, the Ministry of Education of the country and the National Academy of Sciences.

The experiment will last until 2020. The authorities of the republic do not disclose its budget. This is reported by the South China Morning Post (Gattacca by 2022? China to select Winter Olympics athletes by their genes).

The 2022 Winter Olympic Games will be held in Beijing. This is the third consecutive Games (after the 2018 OI in Pyeongchang and 2020 OI in Tokyo) to be held in Asia.

The budget of the Olympics in China is 3.36 billion euros. This is less than one tenth of the cost of the 2008 Summer Games, also held in Beijing.
