Russian and Dutch scientists have signed an agreement on the establishment of the Skoltech Center for Science, Innovation and Education for Stem Cell Research.

According to the Skoltech website, the document was signed by Edward Crowley, Rector of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, Professor Folkert Kuipers, Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Groningen, and N.K. Yankovsky, Director of the Institute of General Genetics, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The new center will be the first of Skoltech's 15 Central Research Institutes, which are planned to be established by 2020. As experts emphasize, the implementation of combined programs will allow students to be involved in modern scientific developments from the very first years of study. It is assumed that the center will annually produce at least 20 specialists in the field of regenerative medicine.

"The creation of Skoltech Centers of Science, Innovation and Education is based on the promising idea, from my point of view, that universities should independently determine for themselves priority areas of research and commercialization of their results in accordance with the interests of society and the needs of the development of the national economy," said Edward Crowley, Rector of Skoltech.

Experts hope that the work of the center will allow Russia to play on an equal footing among the world leaders in the field of biomedical research in the near future.

The Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology was established on October 26, 2011 by the Skolkovo Foundation together with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It covers five areas: these are energy sciences, biomedical sciences, information sciences, space and nuclear sciences. In 2012, Skoltech recruited the first group of students for master's degree programs in the field of information technology and energy technologies.
