STAP cells: details of the investigation

Japanese Research Institute: STAP cells are created using conventional stem cells

Ksenia Naka, RIA Novosti

The Japanese Research Institute RIKEN announced that the infamous stem STAP cells, which appeared allegedly under the influence of acid on lymphocytes, were created using embryonic stem cells long known in science.

"Embryonic stem cells were added (during the experiment) or with the help of their addition, scientific justifications (of the results of the study) became possible," says the report of the RIKEN special committee, which studied the materials of the study on the creation of STAP cells, which first became a sensation in world science, and then because of the revealed fraud in the description. experiments and the inability to repeat the same results became the loudest scientific scandal of the year. [...]

The Institute invited Obokata to repeat the experiments in the laboratory under round-the-clock video surveillance and present the results by the end of November. Since July, Obokata has tried 48 times to create STAP cells using her own method and using cells from the same mouse, but none of the experiments yielded results. At the same time, a group of researchers tried to independently repeat the results published in the article. All these experiments failed and due to the fruitlessness of the attempts were stopped, as the institute reported on December 19. This week, Obokata resigned from the institute.

The committee investigating the study concluded that "the presence of such a significant number of embryonic stem cells does not exclude the possibility that their addition was the result of intent, and not an accidental mistake."
