"People's Daily"

A giant DNA sequencing database will be created in Nanjing (Jiangsu Province, East China) in order to create a database of genetic information of ethnic Chinese. This was reported in the provincial health department.

This project is part of the project to create a State Big Data Center for Health and Medicine in the Jiangbei New District in Nanjing, the total investment in which is 6 billion yuan, said Lan Qing, deputy head of the provincial Committee for Health and Planned Parenthood.

During the first phase of the project, the center will store medical information and health information for 80 million people, which is equal to the population of Jiangsu Province, Lan said.

"When the equipment is ready, the estimated capacity of DNA sequencing will reach 400-500 thousand samples per year," he added.

The DNA sequencing project will be jointly implemented by the state-owned Yangzi Group, Southeastern University and Nanjing Medical University.

Researchers will use the big data created in the database to study genetic mutations related to major diseases, search for the effects of interactions between genes and environmental problems on human health, and to provide statistical support for the diagnosis and treatment of major diseases, Lan said.

Member of the Board of Directors of Yangzi Group Cai Lung said that the project will focus on population genetics, newborns, children's brain, cognitive development, cancer, rare and chronic diseases.

According to him, it will take about 4 years to create a database.
