The only contender

The Director of the Bioengineering Center received the RAS Prize in Genomics for 2019

Academician, head of the Bioengineering Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences Konstantin Scriabin became the winner of the biochemist Alexander Baev Prize for 2019. The vote took place on Tuesday during a meeting of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a TASS correspondent reports.

The Baev Prize is a prize awarded by the Russian Academy of Sciences since 2004 for outstanding work in the field of genomics and genoinformatics. One work was submitted for the 2019 prize – a series of works by Academician Konstantin Scriabin on sequencing and research of genomes from microorganisms to humans.

Scriabin is a specialist in structural and functional genomics, genetic engineering and nanobiotechnology. His research activities include structural and functional genomics, genetic engineering, systems biology, including decoding genome structures, modeling development processes, creating nanovaccines and other biologically active nanostructures for use in medicine.

The main scientific results of Scriabin include, in particular, that he was the first in the world to determine the complete structure of genes encoding ribosomal RNA of a eukaryotic organism – yeast-saccharomycetes; using the achievements of nanobiotechnology, he carried out projects to decode the genomes of microorganisms, viruses, cellular organelles and plant chromosomes. In addition, he developed an original mathematical model of genetic control of flower development, as well as a technological platform for creating nanovaccines.
