The quality of the products will be checked by PCR analysis

Roskachestvo plans to analyze the DNA of products to exclude substitution of raw materials

Roskachestvo has proposed to introduce in Russia a methodology for DNA research of food products to detect substitution of raw materials and detection of counterfeit, said the head of the department Maxim Protasov on Wednesday.

This was reported by the correspondent of "FederalPress" from the meeting of the State Commission for combating illicit trafficking in industrial Products at the National Defense Management Center of the Russian Federation.

"The analysis shows that the producers of canned food and preserves carry out substitution of products, which should not be. The method of research using DNA segment screening allows us to determine exactly which specific type of product was used," the head of Roskachestvo said during the meeting.

He clarified that during the recently completed study, the agency selected 74 samples of food products in six regions of Russia. The samples were examined according to 25 indicators by PCR (polymerase chain reaction). However, the results of research by this method have not previously been accepted by market participants – manufacturers, operators and retail chains. Nevertheless, the results of the study using the DNA method, which is actively used abroad, were accepted by all market participants – retail chains strengthened input control over products.

"It should be noted that the method of DNA analysis of food products has not yet been certified in Russia, which entails the risk of biased court decisions on claims from retail chains and operators. Nevertheless, it allows us to establish a system for monitoring the traceability of the turnover of products," Protasov stressed.

Ilya Shestakov, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, Head of Rosrybolovstvo, also noted the effectiveness of the DNA analysis method during his speech.

"Together with law enforcement agencies in 2016, we conducted 6 thousand events, 4 thousand violations were detected, 400 tons of illegally extracted resources were seized. However, the results of the work are not very comforting yet – the poaching turnover is higher than the seized volumes. Modern methods of genetic analysis allow us to determine whether the products are aquaculture or illegally obtained," Ilya Shestakov said. He also clarified that in 2016, the agency confirmed 72% of all legal exports of aquatic biological resources.
