Ultrasound against cancer

Rostec showed for the first time at the BIOTECHMED forum a complex for ultrasound oncotherapy

Shvabe Holding of Rostec State Corporation at the BIOTECHMED 2019 forum demonstrated a unique diagnostic and therapeutic medical complex designed for the treatment of neoplasms using focused ultrasound (HIFU therapy). To date, this is one of the safest ways to combat cancer. Serial production of the device is planned to begin in 2021.

Diagnostic and therapeutic medical HIFU-complex is an apparatus for the treatment of neoplasms of the mammary and thyroid glands using high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). The complex allows you to safely affect the affected organs through the skin. The device is characterized by high accuracy and effectiveness of treatment.

"Noninvasive ultrasound technologies are an effective and safe way to treat cancer patients, which has been proven by world practice. In Russia, such a method is still rare. We are implementing the first domestic project in the field of HIFU therapy in partnership with Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. Factory tests of the complex will begin this year, clinical trials will begin in 2020, serial production is planned for 2021. The production of products is planned to be deployed in the Novosibirsk region at the Novosibirsk Instrument-making Plant. The project has already been supported by the regional government, it will assist in the introduction of new treatment systems in regional medical institutions," said Sergey Chemezov, General Director of Rostec State Corporation.

The complex consists of a power electronic module, a medical stand with a monitor and control panel, a robotic manipulator, an ultrasound unit and a patient chair.

One of the advantages of the complex is that it is easy to adapt it to the needs of the customer and make it more versatile due to replaceable ultrasonic transducers. The devices being created now are designed for the treatment of neoplasms of organs located close to the surface of the skin (mammary gland, thyroid gland). In the future, it is planned to develop replaceable ultrasound transducers for the therapy of organs located deep from the skin surface (pelvic organs, prostate gland, liver) and the therapy of neoplasms in the brain.

Other features of the complex include three–dimensional visualization of the object of study, which simplifies the identification of the area for irradiation and monitoring of the operation, as well as a telecommunications system that allows remote operations and teleconferences with colleagues.
