You can, but be careful

In Japan, it may be allowed to edit the genes of human embryos

Ukrinform

An expert commission of representatives of the Ministries of Health and Science of Japan has proposed draft rules that will allow editing the genes of human embryos at early stages of development.

This is stated in an article in the publication Nature (Japan set to allow gene editing in human embryos).

As noted, the proposed project allows to modify the genes of embryos for scientific purposes and imposes restrictions on intervention in the embryo for reproductive purposes, but there is no legal prohibition on this.

The draft will be open for public discussion starting next month and, if approved, will enter into force in the first half of next year.

Bioethicist Tetsuya Ishii from Hokkaido University emphasizes that the publication of the project means that Japan is beginning to change its neutral position on human genetic modification and encourages scientific research in this area.

Manipulations with the DNA of embryos can reveal a lot about early human development. In addition, scientists hope that in the future it may help to cope with genetic mutations that lead to hereditary diseases.

In many countries of the world, such studies are prohibited, because ethicists and other researchers are sure that such manipulations can be carried out not only for medical purposes.
