Artificial intelligence will help oncologists

Doctors are turning to the capabilities of the Watson supercomputer
to search for methods of diagnosis and cancer control

The IBM Watson supercomputer is a fairly well-known artificial intelligence system, which, without exaggeration, can be called the most advanced artificial intelligence in the world today. According to DailyTechInfo, oncologists from two independent groups are now turning to the capabilities of this artificial intelligence in the hope of helping in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

According to information from representatives of IBM (IBM Watson Hard At Work: New Breakthroughs Transform Quality Care for Patients – VM), doctors from the Maine Cancer Center (Maine Center for Cancer Medicine) and the Westmed Medical Group began working with the Watson supercomputer. Scientists are developing an application that will be based on the cognitive abilities of the Watson system, which can act as a cancer diagnostician and which can give recommendations on methods of treating this disease.

As initial data, doctors load into the memory of a supercomputer more than 600 thousand medical reports and diagnoses, 2 million pages of texts taken from 42 medical journals and the results of clinical trials in the field of cancer research. Thanks to its high computing power, Watson can use its algorithms to "sift" 1.5 million records from the medical histories of various patients and find out the most appropriate treatment methods in each case, based on data from the histories of successful control of similar diseases.

In the fight against cancer, data prepared by clinicians and experts of the WellPoint insurance medical company and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, who spent thousands of man-hours teaching Watson the intricacies of processing, analyzing and interpreting complex clinical medical information, are also used.

"Each of the doctors realizes that he cannot keep up with the abundance of new information appearing monthly in hundreds of new articles in various journals and online publications. But every doctor wants to make the right diagnoses, prescribe appropriate treatment and use the most modern medicines that should bring real benefits to the patient. And using the artificial intelligence of the Watson supercomputer for this purpose is the most appropriate method of solving the above problem," Samuel Nussbaum, chief medical specialist of WellPoint insurance company, expressed his opinion.
