African Ebola is more important for the Ministry of Health than Russian AIDS

Two news (no comments, because there are not enough letters):

Russia suspends development of AIDS vaccine
The main reason is the lack of funds to continue the program

Echo of MoscowThe development of the Russian vaccine has been stopped due to the lack of funding from the state budget.

This was stated by the head of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency Vladimir Uiba. According to him, the vaccine has already passed preclinical and clinical trials, but no money was allocated for further tests. The fact that Russian scientists have reached the final stage of developing a vaccine against HIV, health officials said last year. The head of the Ministry of Health Veronika Skvortsova promised a prototype by the end of 2014. Scientists also said that the vaccine would be fully ready in three to four years.

Work on an HIV vaccine has been underway since the second half of the 90s. In 2007, the government allocated a billion rubles for clinical trials. Several institutes were working in parallel. In St. Petersburg, virologists have now reached the second phase of trials – it includes evaluating the effectiveness of the drug in patients with HIV infection. And the first phase was completed both in Moscow and Novosibirsk. Moreover, scientists said that the vaccine in many respects surpasses foreign analogues, the tolerance index of domestic drugs was higher. And with proper funding, it could be a real breakthrough.

The World Health Organization is now giving priority not to AIDS vaccines, but to another method of treatment and prevention," says Vadim Pokrovsky, director of the Federal AIDS Control Center.

Vladimir Mayanovsky, Chairman of the Coordinating Council of the public organization "Association of People Living with HIV", is saddened by the news that the development of the Russian vaccine has been suspended.

According to Mayanovsky, if HIV and AIDS prevention were carried out normally in Russia, it would be possible to stop the epidemic altogether. The news about the suspension of the development of the Russian vaccine did not surprise the deputy chairman of the Duma budget Committee Oksana Dmitrieva. She did not rule out that other medical programs will be closed during the year.

Russia will give $40 million for Ebola

<url>Russia continues to contribute to the fight against the epidemic of Ebola virus disease.

According to Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Dmitry Maksimychev, in general, Moscow plans to transfer more than $ 40 million for these purposes.

According to him, Russia provides not only financial, but also technical assistance to the affected countries. Russian transport companies and epidemiologists work in West Africa. Maksimychev recalled that in August, a 200-bed anti-epidemic hospital was opened in Guinea, which "is designed to provide high-quality medical services to patients with both Ebola and other diseases."

He noted that the Russian side also pays attention to strengthening the national health systems of the affected countries, TASS reports. As part of these efforts, on January 17, a center for microbiological research and treatment of epidemiological diseases was opened in Guinea, which is designed for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infectious and especially dangerous diseases and is one of the most modern medical institutions for combating acute viral diseases in West Africa.

According to Maksimychev, the medical center at the initial stage of its work will specialize in the treatment of Ebola patients. "Russia is making a significant contribution to the scientific research of the virus. Work is underway to create immunobiological drugs for treatment – a vaccine and immunoglobulins, the development of a highly sensitive test system for the diagnosis of the disease, which is successfully used in the affected countries," he said.
