A female camel cloned 6 years ago is pregnant

The female of the first cloned camel in the world is preparing to bring offspring

IA TheRussianTimes reports (without reference to the original source – a note on The National World's first cloned camel celebrates sixth birthday with pregnancy) that a female camel named Injaz (translated from Arabic "achievement") was cloned from the eggs of a dead relative and was born from a surrogate mother on April 8, 2009 weighing about 30 kg after 378 days of gestation. Now she is waiting for offspring herself.

"We are very pleased that Injaz is pregnant now and expect that the birth will take place at the end of this year," said Dr. Nisar Wani, scientific director of the Center for Reproductive Biotechnology in Dubai.

Conception took place in a natural way, so this can prove that cloned camels can reproduce offspring.

After the birth of Injaz, which caused great excitement in the scientific world, the researchers said that cloning would help preserve the genetics of camels. These animals are a valuable commodity in the desert areas of the Persian Gulf and are used for racing and cargo transportation. They also give low-fat milk and can bring their owners millions of dollars in camel beauty contests.
