Heart instead of battery

Pacemaker that is recharged by the heart is developed by scientistsDavid Derbyshire, Daily Mail, 11th November 2008

Scientists led by Paul Roberts from the hospital at the University of Southampton (Southampton University Hospital), Great Britain, have created a pacemaker that charges directly from the heart, which it helps at the same time.
This breakthrough was another step towards the day when pacemakers, defibrillators and other medical implants will be able to work without batteries, but only at the expense of excess energy of the body.
The researchers are convinced that the device without batteries will be available within a few years. In their trial versions, the human body was able to provide about 17% of the electricity needed to operate a pacemaker.

Now the batteries in such devices work from seven to ten years. Only some of them can be charged from the outside, in other cases it is necessary to perform surgery under general anesthesia. Each such operation costs the British Public Health Service about 10 thousand pounds.

The trial models were presented at a meeting of the American Heart Association in New Orleans. The researchers are convinced that in the next technical generation their pacemakers will become more energetically independent.
