Japanese Government Council approves iPS cell transplantationjapancenter based on NHK World materials
The Council of the Government of Japan has prepared guidelines for approving, under certain conditions, the transplantation of IPS induced pluripotent stem cells to humans.
Multifunctional cells, first obtained by Professor Shinya Yamanaka of Kyoto University, are said to be able to transform into various tissues and organs of the human body. The researchers hope to use cells in regenerative medicine to create parts of the body that have been lost due to illness or accidents.
The Board of Experts of the Ministry of Health of Japan on Wednesday actually approved clinical trials of iPS cells, but only for patients suffering from life-threatening diseases or severely weakened patients who are not helped by other treatments.
The Council informs that individual research programs for safety purposes will be double monitored by both the research institution and the Ministry of Health, and the results of research should be publicly announced.
