"The Macchiarini case": a new round of scandal

Killer doctor who transplanted trachea in Russia to leave Karolinska Institute

RIA News

Swedish surgeon Paolo Macchiarini, who performed scandalous tracheal transplant operations in Russia and a number of other countries, which ended in the death of almost all volunteers, will be dismissed from the Karolinska Institute of Stockholm upon the expiration of his contract, the press service of the institution said.

Since the late 2000s, Italian-Swedish surgeon Paolo Macchiarini has been working on the creation of technologies for growing artificial tracheas from the patient's stem cells and transplanting them into his body. Over the past five years, he has performed several tracheal transplants, most of which resulted in the death of a patient, including one woman in Russia who did not need an emergency transplant and participated in experiments for the sake of science.

In 2011, Macchiarini, together with Kuban State Medical University and Krasnodar Regional Clinical Hospital No. 1 (KKB), won a mega-grant from the Government of the Russian Federation to implement a research, clinical and educational project in the field of respiratory tract and lung regeneration, which resulted in the creation of the country's first international center for regenerative medicine in Krasnodar.

The Karolinska Institute, where Macchiarini works, announced that he no longer plans to continue cooperation with the surgeon, the reason for which was that he "excessively exploited the brand of the institute in his work in Krasnodar."

According to the institute's press secretary, Claes Keisu, the surgeon's activity in Krasnodar undermines the reputation of the Swedish research institution and makes the public less inclined to trust scientists working at the Karolinska Institute.

The Institute, according to him, intends to terminate cooperation with Macchiarini, dissolve his research group and withdraw all his research "outside the institute." In addition, the management of the organization will create an independent commission that will check all the circumstances of the hiring and work of Macchiarini at the Institute for violations.

The two main claims of the institute to the surgeon's activities are that he "whitewashed" the results of his experiments in articles published by his scientific group, and also did not notify patients of all the risks that such experimental treatment entails.

The reason for the publication of such statements was a series of films about the activities of Macchiarini, which was released on Swedish television in early January, as well as a loud scandal related to the fact that the surgeon tried to offer his hand and heart to a popular TV presenter, with whom he wanted to get married in the presence of Pope Francis, Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin.
