The first Alzheimer's vaccine in the form of nasal spray is ready for testing

For decades of research, scientists have failed to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease. The only hope for patients is temporary relief of symptoms: insomnia, memory loss and the ability to make conclusions. However, last week in Boston announced the start of the first clinical trials of a nasal vaccine against Alzheimer's disease, which promises to slow down or even stop the development of this disease.

A small group of 16 volunteers aged 60 to 85 years with Alzheimer's symptoms will receive two doses of the vaccine a week apart. A modest trial conducted by the Harvard Medical School Clinical Hospital is the tip of the iceberg of decades of research — scientists are trying to find a way to help the immune system destroy beta-amyloids in the brain.

These peptides form amyloid plaques in the brain, a characteristic sign of Alzheimer's disease. It accumulates between nerve cells, potentially disrupting a person's ability to think and recall the necessary information, according to a press release from Brigham and Women's Hospital Launches Clinical Trial of Nasal Vaccine for Alzheimer's Disease.

The vaccine in the form of a nasal spray delivers Protollin directly to the brain through the nasal passage, activating immune cells.

There is nothing new in the idea itself, but now scientists have a better understanding of how to treat this disease, explained Jeffrey Cummings, a neuroscientist at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. Nasal spray may be a more effective way to deliver a drug to immune cells than infusion or inhalation.

The results of the clinical trial will be able to tell more about how to prevent the development of the disease, since the participants of the experiment are at an early stage of the disease and otherwise maintain good health. First of all, the researchers want to establish a safe and effective dose of the drug.
