Two new studies by Scandinavian scientists at once contradict the statement of the Americans: scientists at the University of Turku in Finland have proved that people lose sleep problems with retirement, and their Swedish colleagues from Stockholm University believe that people get 10 years younger in retirement.

Finnish scientists have found that in retirement, people begin to sleep peacefully at night – during their active working life, such luxury is not available to them due to constant stress and worries at work, writes Sleep magazine, specializing in sleep problems. So, according to the results of their study, the probability of night sleep disorders seven years after retirement decreases by 26%.

The higher the position, the worse the sleep15,000 volunteers participated in the study, and among them the frequency of sleep disorders decreased from 24.2% observed before retirement to 17.8% in the first year after retirement.

The greatest problems with sleep were experienced by people who were in a state of depression or mental exhaustion before retirement.

Improvements in the quality of sleep after retirement are most noticeable among senior management representatives who reported strong emotional stress at work, as well as among people who worked the night shift.

Only those who receive a good pension sleep wellHowever, Professor Jussi Vakhtera, a healthcare specialist from the University of Turku, emphasizes that the test participants are people with stable jobs who have retired from the pension prescribed by law at the age of 55 to 60 years, and receive a pension of 80% of the salary.

According to the Watchman, the results obtained are applicable only to those people who were able to secure a comfortable pension and who do not need to worry about their finances. "In countries and companies where the level of pension payments does not allow maintaining financial well-being after the age of working capacity, sleep problems after retirement can only worsen due to stress," he says.

As a result, it was found that in the years leading up to retirement, the well-being of most of the subjects steadily worsened, but abruptly went on the mend as soon as they stopped working.  These people have become 10 years younger," the scientists concluded.

Scientists are against raising the retirement ageAll over the world, there have been increasing calls from politicians to raise the retirement age in order to reduce the amount of financial obligations of governments to the aging population.

"Our work should cause concern among politicians who want to convince people to work longer," says Hugo Westerlund, one of the authors of the study.
