Questionable offer

American startup promises rejuvenation for 20 years for $1 million

The anti-aging industry has long been associated with loud promises and dubious procedures such as transfusions of young blood to the elderly. However, the biotech company Libella Gene Therapeutics managed to stand out even against this background, Futurism notes. Representatives of the startup said they would rejuvenate customers for 20 years for an astronomical sum of $ 1 million.

The experimental therapy offered by Libella Gene Therapeutics is based on telomere elongation. These structures, located at the ends of chromosomes, protect the genetic material from damage, but they shorten with age. Some scientists believe that this is one of the causes of aging.

The startup plans to introduce a genetic sequence into patients' cells that will start the telomere repair process. And he promises that this will not only stop aging, but also return the lost youth.

From the point of view of science, the promises of Libella Gene Therapeutics seem at best to be a delusion, and at worst to be a fraud.

Although experts recognize the role of telomeres in age-related changes, attempts to prolong human life by increasing their length are considered pseudoscientific practice, at least at the current stage of the development of scientific knowledge. So far, this technique has only reached animal testing, so its clinical application is a very distant and unclear prospect.

Experts also warn that telomere elongation can cause the development of cancer, because in malignant cells these structures are also longer than usual.

Even more suspicious are the huge cost of the procedure and the fact that a US-based company plans to conduct tests in a small clinic in Colombia. Most likely, this is just an attempt to evade the strict rules of medical regulation in force in the United States.
