BIOMEMBRANES 2016: mechanisms of aging and age-related diseases
From September 26 to 30, 2016, the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) will host the international conference "BIOMEMBRANES 2016: Mechanisms of aging and age-related diseases".
The study of biological membranes occupies a central place in molecular and cellular biology. Biological membranes delimit the internal contents of the cell from the extracellular space and consist mainly of lipids and membrane proteins. Membrane proteins mediate the interaction between the cell and the environment, as well as between neighboring cells, participating in the transport of ions, nutrients, signal transmission and energy conversion. Their dysfunctions often lead to the development of such serious diseases as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, diabetes, cancer, heart attack and many others. Despite the fact that membrane proteins make up only about a third of the proteins encoded in the human genome, 60-70% of modern medicines have membrane proteins as their targets, which underlines their key importance for pharmacology and medicine.
The conference will be attended by world-class scientists in the subject area. The scientific program of the conference will be presented by such key speakers as Raymond Stevens and Vadim Cherezov – pioneers in the study of G-protein coupled receptors, Marat Yusupov – discoverer of the structure of the eukaryotic ribosome, Ernst Bamberg – founder of optogenetics. Werner Kühlbrandt, who obtained an atom-precise structure from ATP synthetase, an intracellular motor, Norbert Dencher, who for the first time showed fundamental changes in biochemical processes during aging, Raul Gainetdinov, who showed the critical importance of G–protein coupled receptors in experiments with mice, and many others eminent foreign and domestic scientists.
