From October 5 to 8, the OpenBio platform for open communications in the field of virology, biotechnology, and biopharmaceuticals will be held for the eighth time in the Koltsovo science city of the Novosibirsk region. The OpenBio program includes a three–day conference of young scientists and a scientific and business forum with discussions on longevity, combating the spread of HIV infection and developing vaccines against COVID-19, as well as an exhibition of achievements of biotechnology companies. The events are organized in a hybrid format, with the ability to connect to an online broadcast on the official website.

Bio-food-tech: a plate of the future

Technological trends in the food industry in the coming years will be analyzed at OpenBio-2021. The importance of the dialogue is emphasized by the upcoming cardinal changes that are associated with developments in the field of vegetable protein. As noted by Anna Nenakhova, moderator of the site, CEO of Uralchem Innovation LLC, in the USA last year the market of plant products was estimated at $ 7 billion. In Russia, the figures are several orders of magnitude more modest, however, the trend for plant-based food is spreading here as well. There will be a conversation about developments and their commercialization, taking into account the wishes of consumers.

"The discussion of the role of biotechnologies in the field of foodtech will open with a speech by Viktor Maleev, Advisor to the Director of Scientific Work of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He will talk about global nutrition problems and its relationship with infections. Then experts from the field of new food production, developers, merchants and market analysts will join the dialogue. In the final, there will be a presentation of data on sales of new food products in Russia," said Anna Nenakhova.

How innovators are helped

The starting years for innovative companies are the most difficult. Targeted assistance from development institutions is vital in them. The role and activities of such organizations for the formation of conditions for the advanced development of innovative projects will be discussed at the round table "Development of the ecosphere of technological transfer in the regions".

"Our discussion is an opportunity to hear and understand how they work in other regions, not only in Siberia, but also in the central part of Russia. This way we will quickly understand what we are missing and what best practices we can share with colleagues to support innovators," said Alexander Nikolaenko, Director of the Novosibirsk Regional Innovation Fund.

Active longevity – instructions for use

The extension of the active period of life and modern approaches to medicine are discussed annually at the longest session of OpenBio "Technologies of Life". The platform gathers leading experts of active longevity, preventive and personalized medicine, psychiatry and genetics from all over Russia.

"The program of the platform is designed so that as a result, the listener will receive holistic information about the preservation of the health of the body. How to determine the markers of youth and old age, how to manage them? We give a recipe for action. After listening to our session, a person learns about tools for managing their health and markers of youth. This year we started to reveal the topic of senolytics, oncology, a very strong block of speeches on genetics and epigenetics, we will continue to talk with experts about the youth of the skin," said Yulia Smirnova, moderator of the site, author and presenter of the program "Youth and Longevity" on Mediametrics.

Artem Elmuratov, the second moderator of the eight-hour session, co-founder and development director of the Genotek Medical Genetics Center, noted that this year the program was supplemented with two important blocks. For the first time, experts will discuss brain health at OpenBio, as well as modern solutions for prolonging life through the use of big data, virtual reality and IT technologies. Elmuratov himself plans to share the latest results of Genotek's research on the relationship between human genetics and the course of COVID-19.

Supercomputers and Big data

The traditional plenary session on SKIF and megascience this year is dedicated to supercomputers and scientific data generators. The participants of the discussion – prominent scientists from scientific institutes led by Valentin Parmon, Chairman of the SB RAS, and Mikhail Fedoruk, Rector of NSU, will discuss the applicability of supercomputers for processing big data of the SKIF synchrotron and for using computing centers in biological experiments and research for life sciences.

"We have to distribute the areas of responsibility, what will relate to the Lavrentiev supercomputer center, and what will relate to the internal computing circuit of SKIF. There will be a lot of specifics and discussions on various issues in our meeting. For example, the policy of working with data: distribution of priorities and access levels, storage locations for hot, warm and cold data. What types of calculators and in what quantity are needed: GPU, CPU or innovative neural and tensor cores. Colleagues say that they strongly lack the competencies to work with big data, they ask us to think together where to move. At NSU, we are thinking about training programs on methods related to machine learning and automation of big data processing. Of course, it is necessary to study the requests of other institutes of the SB RAS, their proposals," said Alexey Okunev, moderator of the site, Director of the VKI NSU.

Prevention of cardiovascular and oncological diseases

A new discussion platform at OpenBio-2021 will be devoted to the prevention of non-communicable diseases, in particular oncological, cardiovascular. The moderator of the platform, Alexander Rozanov, Assistant Director for Regional Development and Federal Projects of the Russian Gerontological Research and Clinical Center of the Russian Federal State Medical University named after N.I. Pirogov of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, sees the task of the discussion in finding the optimal combination of drug and non-drug methods of risk correction, taking into account their impact on the quality of life of the patient.

"In the case of non-communicable diseases, a pile of recommendations immediately falls on the patient. For example, to lose excess weight or gain extra weight, balance your diet and immediately give up all bad habits. It is a rare case when a patient can fulfill all these wishes immediately and generally radically change his life. But if you adjust your lifestyle gradually in small steps, towards a healthy one, then there are more chances of success. This is the purpose of our dialogue. To discuss various prevention technologies, share experiences and views on this problem," explained Alexander Rozanov.

How to work with a patent

The discussion "Deal with intelligence" this year will be held in the format of "questions and answers" with two experts: Andrey Moskvich, Head of the Center for Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer of Sirius University, Patent attorney of the Russian Federation and Eurasia and Leonid Guryev, patent lawyer of the USA. Moderator of the discussion Ekaterina Shekhtman, Patent Attorney of the Russian Federation and Managing partner of INCO LLC, is sure that the conversation between experts and representatives of innovative business, scientific institutions will focus on the formation of intellectual property and mechanisms for the functioning of patents with the lowest costs and the greatest efficiency.

"I work in the market with startups, large innovative companies and research institutes and I see that everyone's situations are similar. The questions to the experts are formulated based on the reality that exists here and now," explained Ekaterina Shekhtman.
