They're not sloppy

The cause of the development of "unruly hair syndrome" has been found

Elena Krasnova, "Search"

Tousled hair in children is not always the result of sloppiness. A rare anomaly – "unruly hair syndrome" – can develop at the age of 3 months to 12 years. As a rule, with this disease, curls stick out in all directions, they cannot be combed and laid. Most often, the hair of such children is dry and shiny, but not brittle. They are also called vitreous; they have a silver-blond or straw color. The reason is a change in the shape of the hair section.

The disease was first described in the 1970s. Since then, no more than 70 articles have been published, many of them simply stated the fact of the presence of pathology. In a new study, where experts from the University of Bonn studied more than 100 children, they managed to find out: "unruly hair syndrome" is associated with genetics. 76 volunteers were found to have mutations in the PADI3 gene encoding a protein involved in hair formation – peptidyl-arginine deiminase type III.

The mechanism of action of the anomaly is as follows: when a mutation occurs in a gene, the function of the protein changes. If it is a protein located in the hair follicle, most likely, the hair will not look like everyone else's. Researchers note: a similar syndrome is a recessive genetic pathology. That is, both father and mother must be carriers of the mutated gene, even if it does not reveal itself in any way. And only if the child gets one copy of the "broken" gene from his parents, he will become a carrier of the disease.
