Your genes can be hacked

Hackers can substitute a diagnosis or steal genetic information

U.S. regulators have warned healthcare providers about the risk of hacking into DNA sequencing machines manufactured by Illumina Inc., which could compromise patient data. Several next-generation devices have been found to have a software vulnerability that allows an unauthorized user to remotely control the system and change settings or data. This is stated in the letter U.S. Food and Drug Administration. No such incidents have been reported yet, but hackers are quite capable of changing a patient's clinical diagnosis or gaining access to confidential genetic information.

Illumina has practically monopolized the genetic sequencing market. Her machines are used both in research and in medical practice. The company said it has developed a software patch and is working on a permanent fix for vulnerabilities.

"Illumina takes data privacy and cybersecurity very seriously and prioritizes the security of tools, as well as the protection of genomic and personal data," a company spokesperson told Bloomberg.

DNA contains a huge treasure trove of personal information about health, relationships, personality and family history. As the popularity of genetic testing grows in both medical and consumer contexts, such information needs to be protected.

At least two other genetic testing companies—Veritas Genetics and MyHeritage—have faced data leaks. In both cases, the companies stated that access to genetic data was not obtained.

There are more and more reports of vulnerability to cyberattacks of medical equipment and devices. For example, hackers can deceive AI that diagnoses oncology. Or remotely increase the dose of incoming insulin.

At the beginning of 2022, Cynerio, a healthcare cybersecurity company, estimated that 53% of Internet-connected IoT devices in hospitals are vulnerable to hacker attacks.
