In anticipation of the future

Merck announces the launch of the Future Insight Prize for breakthrough scientific work with an annual prize fund of 1 million euros

  • The first award will be presented in 2019 for promising products in the field of protecting humanity from new viral diseases.Merck will present the Future Insight Award every year for the next 35 years.
  • The statement was made within the framework of the Curious 2018 – Future Insight conference.
  • Darmstadt, Germany, July 2018.

The leading scientific and technological company Merck has announced the establishment of a new award for researchers. For the next 35 years, the company will annually award the Future Insight prize, the prize fund of which is up to 1 million euros. The prize will be awarded to researchers who have had a significant impact on the future of humanity with their work and have introduced innovations in the field of healthcare, in the food industry and energy.

"At the Curious 2018 – Future Insight conference, we are discussing the future of science and technology, so it is right to announce the Future Insight Award there. With this award, we want to stimulate breakthrough science and the development of innovations in the development of products and technologies that change our lives and help all of humanity," said Stefan Oshman, Chairman and CEO of Merck. The conference, the main founder of which is Merck, was held for the first time in Darmstadt and brought together world-famous scientists, including five Nobel laureates.

The new award will be presented for the first time at the Curious 2019 conference next year in the category "Healthcare" "Protection from a pandemic" for the development of a conceptual product that helps accelerate the protection of the body from newly emerging pathogens. This product should allow you to quickly analyze emerging pathogens of infections, develop means of treating or preventing diseases and thus protect humanity from outbreaks of new epidemics around the world.

A special team will continuously monitor scientific activities on an international scale, selecting potential candidates for the Future Insight Award. Similarly, experts in their respective fields are free to propose their own candidates. The selected scientists will be contacted and asked to submit their ideas and results to the jury. The jury will include outstanding scientists and managers from both Merck and other institutions. The winner should use the award received for further research on this topic.

In the next few years, the Future Insight Prize will be awarded in the following categories:

2020. Destruction of drug resistance – solving the problems of resistance to antibacterial therapy (category "Healthcare");

2021. Food production – technologies that will allow access to food in conditions of population growth (category "Food");

2022. Conversion of CO2 into fuel is the creation of fuel by photocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere (category "Energy").

All award-winning research projects should become the scientific or technological basis for the creation of products in the future, which we only dream of now. In the first year, we hope to find products that will protect us from possible pandemics in the future. The award should become a catalyst for the implementation of ideas for the creation of these products into life. The same principle applies to the ideas that we plan to consider in other areas: the creation of products and technologies for the destruction of resistance to antibacterial therapy, food production and the conversion of carbon dioxide into fuel. The projects being awarded are presumably not related to or directly help any of Merck's three business lines. More detailed information is available on the award's website.

Scientific Conference Curious 2018 – Future Insight (www.curious2018.com ), at which the award was announced, unites outstanding scientists. The creation of this discussion format is one of the brightest events of the celebration of the 350th anniversary of Merck. More than 35 internationally recognized scientists, including five Nobel laureates, presented their work and discussed the future of science and technology in July 2018 in Darmstadt, Germany. The speakers of the conference addressed an audience of about a thousand guests from all over the world. The topics of the presentations were devoted to Merck's activities in three key areas (healthcare: "Healthy life – new breakthrough steps in therapy and diagnostics", life sciences: "Recreating life in synthetic biology and beyond" and high-tech materials: "Materials and solutions in the field of chemistry and beyond"). Other topics of the conference included digital technologies ("Actively developing digital technologies – the power of computer modeling") and new forms of interaction ("Bright future – new methods of work and cooperation").

"Merck is fighting cancer, multiple sclerosis and other serious ailments. With our products, we help other companies to conduct research faster and more efficiently. We are also engaged in the development of high-tech materials, thanks to which unmanned driving and flexible displays become a reality. We work in close partnership with leading scientists around the world, so it is with great pleasure that we celebrate our wonderful anniversary at the scientific conference Curious 2018 – Future Insight, in which the best of the best participate," Stefan Oshman described the principle of the new conference.
