The award fund in the amount of four hundred and eighty thousand euros (480,000 euros) will be distributed among four innovative projects demonstrating real progress in the field of biological sciences and providing answers to the most important health-related questions in four areas: rare tropical diseases, innovations in the field of vaccines, drug resistance, therapeutic approaches to aging and restorative medicine.

The jury consists of seven eminent members: Prof. Peter C. Agre from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA, winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2003, Prof. Elizabeth H. Elizabeth H. Blackburn from the University of California, San Francisco, winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2009, Prof. Pascal Cossart, Head of the Department for the Study of Interactions between Bacteria and Cells at the Pasteur Institute, Prof. Alice Dautry, President of the Pasteur Institute, Prof. Depei Liu, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and the Beijing United Medical College, Dr. Robert Sebbag, Vice President for Access to Medicines Sanofi and Dr. Elias Zerhouni, President of Global Research and Development Sanofi.

"Thanks to these awards, the Pasteur Institute confirms its commitment to increase interest in the development of research, especially with regard to diseases affecting the least protected categories of the population and characterized by an increase in morbidity on a global scale," said Ellis Daughtry, President of the Pasteur Institute.

"I am enthusiastic about participating in a joint project with the Pasteur Institute that will support researchers who can make a real difference in patients' lives and contribute to key areas of healthcare," said Elias Zerouni, president of Global Research and Development at Sanofi. – "The award of Sanofi and the Pasteur Institute was established in the conditions of a long-term partnership between the two organizations."

Candidates can apply until April 20, 2012. The prizes will be awarded in November 2012 at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. For more information, please visit the Pasteur Institute website.

Sanofi and the Pasteur Institute have a long partnership that reflects the philosophy of Louis Pasteur: "Fundamental and applied research do not exist separately from each other. Research and its practical implementation are connected to each other in the same way as a fruit is connected to a tree branch that holds it."

The first experience of partnership relations took place thanks to the organization of the specialized fund "Fight against Parasitic Diseases", which led to the creation of new research groups. To date, Sanofi also sponsors the Center for Integrative Biology of New Diseases (BIME) and cooperates with the Pasteur Institute in the development of new vaccines against infectious diseases.
