Sandoz HACk is back

Holzkirchen, October 4, 2018

Today, Sandoz, a division of the Novartis Group of companies, announces for the second time the launch of the international competition of innovative ideas Sadoz HACk (Sandoz Healthcare Access Challenge).

Sandoz HACk is an international competition for entrepreneurs and innovators in the field of digital technologies that can complement – or even change – existing approaches to ensuring the availability of medicine. Despite the significant progress of modern medicine, universal accessibility of medical services remains the most important unresolved health problem.

The second Sandoz HACk contest is aimed at finding innovative ideas in the field of digital technologies to increase the availability of medicine worldwide.

Three finalists of the competition will take part in the South by Southwest accelerator in Austin, USA, where, together with Sandoz experts, they will refine their ideas to the stage of a ready-made solution aimed at improving people's lives.

Applications for participation in the Sandoz HACk contest are accepted until November 30, 2018.

Despite the significant progress of modern medicine and attention to the problem of accessibility at the global level, universal access to healthcare remains the largest unrealized medical need with its own specifics in different countries and population groups. Therefore, in order to further improve the situation with the availability of health services, it is necessary to focus on the needs of local communities around the world.

"More than two billion people in the world still do not have access to the necessary medicines. That is why we are launching the Sandoz HACk contest, which aims to find innovative ideas to solve local problems of access to healthcare services," says Richard Francis, Executive Director of Sandoz. – After the pilot launch, this time we have significantly expanded the format of the competition in order to attract as many participants as possible from all over the world to search for ideas to increase the availability of medicine in their regions and countries using digital technologies. Together, we hope to create non-standard, but easily implemented and scalable digital solutions that will significantly affect the quality of life of people around the world."

Innovations in the field of digital technologies are designed to provide economically sound and practical approaches with the potential to increase the availability of medicine. Last year, the Sandoz HACk competition was dedicated to mobile technologies in healthcare – m-health. This year's theme is "The use of digital technologies to ensure the availability of medicine", i.e. the promotion of ideas that can expand patients' access to medicine or help healthcare professionals reach as many people as possible.

In January 2019, three finalists will be determined, who will receive the support of Sandoz experts to finalize their ideas. In March 2019, they will go to the world's leading innovation forum South Southwest (SXSW, Austin, Texas), where innovators gather to exchange experiences and study cutting-edge scientific trends. As a result of the jury's evaluation, one winner will be selected, who will receive start-up funding and support from Sandoz experts to bring his idea to life.
