Rechecking the long-proven

Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences: "Ergoferon", "Anaferon" and other "immunomodulators" are treated only with sugar

"Dr. Peter"

The MSU laboratory checked what is contained in drugs advertised as effective remedies for acute respiratory viral infections, influenza and other viral diseases. And once again we were convinced: in Russia they manage to "be treated" with drugs that do not and have never had an active substance capable of changing anything in the body.

Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician Alexey Khokhlov decided to test homeopathic and so-called release-active drugs using physico-chemical methods. I bought "Anaferon", "Ergoferon" (manufacturer of NPF LLC "Materia Medica Holding") and "Ocillococcinum" (manufacturer – French company "Boiron"), actively advertised during the rise of the incidence of acute respiratory viral infections and influenza, and at the same time "Arthrofoon" and "Subetta" also from the company "Materia Medica Holding". And he sent them for mass spectrometric analysis (a subtle and sensitive method of analysis known to modern science, which is able to detect and register elements at the lowest limits) to the laboratory of Moscow State University. Academician Alexey Khokhlov told about this on his Facebook page. The results of the study (available to "Dr. Peter") – more than 10 pages of mass spectrometric graphs and their descriptions.

The conclusion made by the researchers once again showed that Russia is one of the few countries where they are able to influence the disease with drugs that do not have an active substance:

– Mass spectrometric analysis demonstrated the presence of exclusively sugars in all analyzed preparations. Most toxic substances, being diluted to the limit of sensitivity of the mass spectrometry method, will not cause any harm to the human body. And here they are trying to convince us of the presence of a medicinal effect with even greater dilutions, – explains the academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. – Neither in the mode of registration of positive ions, nor in the mode of registration of negative ions, even traces of peptides or any other organic compounds (except sugars) were found. The detection limit of the method for peptides and most organic compounds is measured in femtograms, those are (10 to minus the 15th degree). Strictly speaking, the result confirms the composition declared by the manufacturers, indicating the actual absence of the active substance.

Alexey Khokhlov clarifies what is meant by sugars: "four of these drugs are mainly lactose (sometimes with an admixture of other sugars), and the Sublette is mainly isomaltite. Lactose and isomaltite belong to the class of sugars. It is important that in addition to sugars, no other compounds were found in the tablets."

Meanwhile, the instructions for Ergoferon and Anaferon say that the drugs have an "immunomodulatory and antiviral effect" when infected with almost all viruses, except perhaps HIV, and even "prevents the development of superinfections." It is stated that "the effectiveness against different viruses has been experimentally and clinically established. However, a quote from the instructions: "The sensitivity of modern physico–chemical methods of analysis (gas-liquid chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, chromato-mass spectrometry) does not allow to assess the content of active components of the drug in biological fluids, organs and tissues, which makes it technically impossible to study pharmacokinetics."

The same "problems with pharmacokinetics" and other drugs of the company "Materia Medica Holding": "Subetta", recommended for patients suffering from diabetes mellitus in the presence of insulin resistance, and "Arthrofoon" – for those suffering from joint problems, including rheumatoid arthritis.

– So, up to femtograms – there is no active substance, but drug manufacturers do not hide this. They claim that as the control tests show, "it still helps," writes Alexey Khokhlov. – So we have fundamental knowledge on the same scale, which says that in the absence of molecules of a substance, its action is impossible. And on the other side of the scale – some control tests.

Recall that at the beginning of 2017, experts of the RAS Commission on Combating Pseudoscience and Falsification of Scientific Research demanded that the Ministry of Health review decisions taken more than 20 years ago on the introduction of homeopathy into the Russian healthcare system, the withdrawal of homeopathic remedies from use in state clinics and did not include them in the standards of medical care. In addition, the Ministry of Health, according to academics, should oblige manufacturers to report in the instructions for drugs about the absence of proven clinical efficacy and indications for use.

But nothing like that happened. And why the Ministry of Health, Roszdravnadzor, who advocate evidence-based medicine, believe that drugs allegedly working on the basis of a "unique" principle of action are treated, neither doctors nor academics know. It is impossible to find explanations of "release activity" in reputable scientific journals. And the drugs created on the basis of this "unique method" are proliferating. In 2019, the Pseudoscience Commission, during the election campaign to the Russian Academy of Sciences, filed claims against candidates for academics who published materials about release-active drugs "Afalaza", "Impaza" and "Divaza". However, the instructions for them say that they are still homeopathic.

– The dilemma is this. Either we believe that, contrary to fundamental scientific knowledge, the medicinal effect can be achieved with such exorbitant dilutions, or we question the results of control clinical trials that have shown that there is an effect," says Alexey Khokhlov. – I would still double-check the control tests, and I would involve completely independent certified groups for this. This applies to both Russian drugs and "Ocillococcinum", which is produced in France. Expert opinions on the results of such tests should be published on the website of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, as required by Article 27 of Federal Law No. 61-FZ of 12.04.2010 "On the circulation of Medicines".
