Useless and even harmful

Don't wear gloves!

Ilya Varlamov

More and more regions are introducing mandatory wearing not only masks, but also gloves. The most surprising thing here is that, it seems, none of the officials themselves understand why they need to wear gloves. Try to look for explanations from the authorities yourself – you will not find anything useful. At best, you can only come across a quote from some head of the region in the spirit of "so that people can protect themselves from the coronavirus." And we are not just recommended to wear gloves, but they demand it, and with the threat of quite serious fines, for example, in Moscow and St. Petersburg from May 12, 4,000 rubles will be fined for the lack of gloves.

The fact is that you can explain the mask mode somehow. Doctors are concerned that there are quite a lot of people who are asymptomatic carriers of COVID-19 or their symptoms are poorly expressed, and the mask can reduce the risk of spreading the virus with saliva if the wearer of the mask has already become ill himself. An important point here is that we wear ordinary fabric masks to protect others, not to protect ourselves. But with gloves, the situation is more interesting, because the virus is not transmitted through the skin (and, fortunately, no one disputes this).

But let's try to figure out what people who are directly related to medicine say about protecting against coronavirus with gloves.

To begin with, what is the information from the website of the World Health Organization:

Question: Is wearing rubber gloves in public places effective as a preventive measure for a new coronavirus infection? Answer: No.
You are more protected from COVID 19 when you do not use rubber gloves, but wash your hands, than when you wear gloves. The causative agent of coronavirus infection COVID 19 can contaminate rubber gloves. Touching your face after that, you will transfer the virus from the surface of the gloves to your face and put yourself at risk of infection.

WHO recommendations for the population in connection with the spread of COVID-19

Hmm, how so? Well, let's do it like Trump and not pay attention to WHO, you never know who writes on their website there.

Here is the opinion of a very specific specialist:

"I would not recommend people without medical knowledge to wear disposable gloves at home at all. Certain knowledge and training are required so that when removing disposable gloves, the microorganisms stuck to them remain there, and would not then end up on the hands, wrists or sleeves of outerwear."

Oyan Assadian, Head of the Austrian Society for Infection Control (ÖGKH) / Deutsche Welle with reference to the online magazine pflegen-online.de

A doctor from Germany is also ironic about gloves:

"In a warm and humid environment, bacteria readily multiply under the glove. At the latest, after removing the gloves, a real sewer will form on your hands. Congratulations!"

Mark Hanefeld, German internist / twitter.com

And the English surgeon in his video on tik-tok also draws attention to the fact that gloves create a false sense of security, and in order not to carry the virus on your hands, it's enough just to wash them more often.

"You put on gloves and went to the supermarket, where you touch a lot of things on the surface of which viruses live. You come out of there and continue to wear the same gloves, collecting germs. There are now a lot more of them accumulated there than could be on your hands if you washed them more often. Remember that with the same hands you will hold on to the steering wheel of the car, and then accidentally touch your face and plant a virus on yourself."

Karan Rangarajan, Surgeon, employee of the National Health Service of England / Lenta.ru with a link to the doctor's video

Similar arguments could be heard even on Russian state TV channels until recently:

"Gloves can give a feeling of false security, because gloves do not protect you – the virus does not pass through the skin. If you grab something dirty with gloves on, and then scratch your nose with gloves on, you will get sick just like (if you scratched) with your bare hand."

Alexander Lukashev, virologist, Director of the E.I. Marcinovsky Institute of Medical Parasitology, Tropical and Vector-borne Diseases / "Let them talk"

You need to be aware that the gloves were designed for very specific purposes. Doctors and all medical personnel in their work necessarily use them to protect their hands from heavy contamination – blood and other biological fluids. In addition, it is important for the doctor not to introduce bacteria into the patient's open wound. Gloves provide protection from diseases only partially (they will save you from getting microorganisms through the blood, if you have cuts, they will be effective against diseases transmitted through the skin) and for a very short time. But the effectiveness of protection against coronavirus is extremely doubtful, especially if you do not change them after each contact with something potentially dangerous.

If you wear gloves, it means that you will not be able to use your phone or wallet, because as soon as you touch these things, the virus will immediately appear on their surface, which means that there will be no further use for gloves. It will still be impossible to touch the face, rub the eyes and scratch the nose. And what is the probability that after the store people will throw away disposable gloves, and not put them in their pocket for future use?

Officials should take measures not on the principle of "the more we come up with, the safer it will become", but clearly understand and inform people why this or that restriction is needed. Otherwise, all this will turn back into just a formality – people will create an appearance just so that the police don't get to them.

Gloves do more harm than good. Don't wear gloves.
