Biosensor for brain cancer

A blood drop test accurately diagnoses brain cancer

Svetlana Maslova, Hi-tech+

Scientists have presented an ultra-sensitive biosensor that not only detects the presence of a tumor in the brain, but also detects its localization and even distinguishes it from other types of solid tumors. It is important that the test is also suitable for monitoring brain cancer therapy, since it is able to detect metastases.

Currently, important results have been achieved in the diagnosis of cancer using a blood test — some experimental tests are able to detect a tumor and its localization at an early stage. Now a group of Canadian researchers has presented a targeted blood test for the diagnosis of brain cancer, according to a press release from the American Chemical Society Biosensor detects brain tumors with less than a drop of blood.

The biosensor developed by scientists detects various biomarkers secreted by the tumor in the blood, such as nucleic acids, proteins and lipids. Then, with the help of artificial intelligence, unique tumor profiles are analyzed.

An assessment of the biosensor's accuracy showed that with just one drop of blood, it could distinguish brain cancer from breast, lung and intestinal cancers with 100% specificity and sensitivity. With the same success, the test distinguished primary tumors from secondary tumors with metastases.

With 96% accuracy, the test could also determine in which of the nine brain regions the tumor is localized, the authors emphasize. This result especially emphasizes the informativeness of the new approach.

There is still further work to be done to introduce the test into clinical practice, but scientists are confident that their technology will have a significant impact on the accurate diagnosis of brain cancer and the control of treatment.

Recently, other researchers have presented a blood test for cancer patients, which allows you to quickly determine the most effective treatment strategy.
