10 risk factors for Alzheimer's disease were identified 15 years before symptoms

In the vast majority of cases, it is possible to diagnose Alzheimer's disease already at the stage of cognitive impairment, when the disease progresses. In a new paper, scientists from France managed to identify ten causes that 15 years before symptoms can signal the risks of developing an incurable disease.

Alzheimer's disease — the most common form of dementia — develops for many years without any symptoms. Cognitive decline, coordination disorders and other signs may be the first signs of the disease. And although Alzheimer's disease is not curable yet, the earlier a person starts to engage in prevention, the higher the chance to delay or slow down the development of the disease.

Realizing this, scientists from The Paris Brain Institute analyzed the data of almost 80 thousand patients to determine the risk factors of the disease. As a result of this work, they managed to compile the top 10 pathologies that indicate increased risks of developing Alzheimer's disease 15 years before symptoms.

Article by Thomas Nedelec et al. Identifying health conditions associated with Alzheimer's disease up to 15 years before diagnosis: an agnostic study of French and British health records published in the journal The Lancet Digital Health – VM.

In total, scientists evaluated the relationship for 123 factors.

Depression tops the list, followed by increased anxiety, stress, hearing disorders, constipation, cervical spondyloarthritis, memory loss, fatigue, falls and sudden weight loss.

"The established links allowed us to confirm well—known associations, such as hearing problems and depression, and other less well-known factors or early symptoms, such as cervical spondyloarthritis and constipation," the authors commented.

Scientists hope that the data obtained will allow doctors to pay more attention to these risk factors and draw people's attention to the risks of dementia in the future. In further studies, they plan to obtain confirmation of their results, as well as to determine the general basis of these diseases and related features.

A completely implicit risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, as new research has shown, can be bacteria that cause respiratory infections. Scientists have found that they can move from the nasopharynx to the brain, provoking symptoms characteristic of neurodegeneration.
