Magnetic storms cause heart attacks and strokes

The EMERCOM warnings about strong magnetic storms have real practical value. It has been scientifically proven that they do have an effect on the human body.

A magnetic storm is considered to be strong if it exceeds 4 points on the Kp-index (the average index of geomagnetic activity for every three hours of a day). As the leading research associate of Laboratory "Space weather" of Institute of Space Research RAS, Doctor of physical and mathematical sciences Tamara Breus told to "Gazeta.ru", the increased activity can provoke disorders of cardiovascular system. And for a person who already has such problems, aggravate them.

For example, studies show that during magnetic storms there are an additional 11,000 heart attacks and 7,000 strokes annually.

"The heart rhythm is also affected by magnetic storms. If it is knocked down, there is tachycardia, bradycardia, arrhythmia," the expert added.

The mechanism of influence is as follows: under the influence of the magnetic field, red blood cells - red blood cells - can stick together, blood begins to thicken and clot, and blood vessels narrow. This causes the blood pressure to rise.
