Fish and seafood lovers are 30% less likely to die from heart attacks and other diseases compared to other elderly people, so they live on average 2.2 years longer, scientists say in an article published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine (Mozaffarian et al., Plasma Phospholipid Long-Chain omega-3 Fatty Acids and Total and Cause-Specific Mortality in Older Adults: A Cohort Study; a press release of Higher blood omega-3s associated with lower risk of premature death among older adults is published on the Harvard School of Public Health – VM website).

"Although regular consumption of fish has always been considered part of a healthy diet, almost no one has tried to find a link between the concentration of fish oil in the blood and the mortality of older people. Our study confirmed that fatty acids are extremely important for the health of the cardiovascular system, and that this benefit is "monetized" in old age in the form of additional years of life," said Dariush Mozaffarian from Harvard University.

Mozaffaryan and his colleagues came to this conclusion by analyzing data collected during 16 years of monitoring the health of the heart and blood vessels of almost three thousand elderly Americans whose age was 65 years or more. As part of this project, social and medical services in several states regularly measured the pressure of volunteers, took blood samples and recorded cases of heart disease and the cause of death.

The authors of the article divided the elderly into two groups – "fish lovers", with an increased proportion of omega-3 fatty acids in the blood, and "ordinary Americans".

Comparing the statistics of diseases and life expectancy, biologists found that volunteers from the first group were 30% less likely to suffer from cardiovascular diseases, including strokes, coronary insufficiency and heart attacks.

These facts were reflected in the longevity of older US citizens – on average, such people lived 2.2 years longer than "ordinary Americans". According to Mozaffaryan and his colleagues, it is not necessary to eat sea fish every day to achieve a positive effect. According to biologists, it is enough to eat two servings of fatty sea fish a week to get the necessary amount of fatty acids.
