A man had his prostate removed for the first time because of the possible risk of cancer

KM.ruA resident of the UK became the first man in the world to have his prostate removed after it turned out that he is a carrier of the "defective" BRCA2 gene, reports The Telegraph (Brit becomes the first in the world to have prostate removed due to faulty gene).

This gene significantly increases the risk of developing aggressive forms of breast and prostate cancer.

The publication does not give the man's name, but it is known that he is 53 years old, he is married and has children. According to the Briton, he decided to go under the surgeon's knife to avoid the fate of his relatives, many of whom suffered from breast or prostate cancer.

At first, doctors refused to perform the operation due to the fact that the removal of the prostate has serious health consequences. In addition to infertility, this can lead to regular problems with urination and sexual dysfunction.

Preliminary screening tests showed that the patient's prostate is absolutely healthy, but the doctors still agreed to the operation after traces of malignant changes were found in the prostate tissue samples.

To the surprise of doctors, after examining the removed organ, a large number of previously undetected cancer cells were found in its tissues.

"The BRCA gene is like the sword of Damocles hanging over you, leaving you in a state of constant fear. I am sure that now many men, BRCA carriers, will follow his example," commented Roger Kirby, a well–known prostate cancer specialist, on the operation.

A similar decision was recently made by Hollywood star Angelina Jolie, who had a double mastectomy after testing positive for the defective BRCA1 gene. Earlier, because of this gene, the actress' mother died of breast cancer.
