Another advantage of completeness

Scientists are again faced with the paradox of obesity

Leslie Cho and her colleagues found a relationship between the sex of patients, their weight and life expectancy. When calculating, the authors took into account such data as the presence of diabetes, smoking and the need for regular medication.

It turned out that women with a body mass index (BMI) from 25 to 29.9 lived longer than men with the same weight and those patients whose weight was normal. Too much excess weight (BMI above 40) did not affect life expectancy in any way.

A similar phenomenon, called the obesity paradox, has been described for other diseases – people who are overweight often have a reduced incidence of a particular disease. Scientists note that the causes of the obesity paradox are still unclear, and they have not yet been able to prove that it is excess weight that contributes to longevity. Perhaps the increase in the life expectancy of overweight women is due to the fact that they need more fatty acids for the heart to work.

The authors, however, emphasize that although women with heart failure do not need to strive for an ideal weight, they still need to monitor their diet.
