Blackout curtains will protect against diabetes

Night lighting increases the risk of diabetes by almost a third

According to statistics, more than 80% of the world's population is exposed to light pollution at night, but so far this problem has been very little studied in terms of harm to health. Previously, scientists have already confirmed the association of excessive night lighting with the development of obesity. In a new job , a team of China has demonstrated significant risks in relation to type 2 diabetes mellitus.

It is known from previous studies that exposure to light at night disrupts the natural 24-hour circadian rhythms and may increase the risks of coronary heart disease and obesity. Nighttime light pollution is especially common in large cities, so scientists from China decided to analyze its effects on middle-aged people living both in megacities and in small towns or villages. Total in the study, which writes Daily Mail, more than 98 thousand people took part.

Observations have shown that exposure to artificial night lighting is associated with impaired control of blood glucose levels, as well as an increased risk of diabetes.

The strongest level of night lighting increased the risk of diabetes by 28%. These participants had elevated blood glucose levels, insulin resistance, and decreased pancreatic beta cell function.

These findings are also supported by an earlier study conducted by scientists from India. Evaluating satellite images showing the level of light pollution at night, scientists found that people living there had an increase in body mass index, blood pressure and the level of so-called "bad" cholesterol.

Together, the data clearly demonstrate that the scale of the impact of night lighting on the population of different countries is huge, which can cause serious consequences for the global health system. For example, in China, this problem could provoke more than 9 million cases of diabetes, scientists estimate.
