This was shown by the latest study of American scientists who studied the data of the previous 13 projects.

Experts from the Icahn Medical School at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York reported that they found a link between oral hygiene and the development of malignant tumors of the head and neck, reports Reuters Health (Good oral hygiene linked to reduced risk of head and neck cancers). To do this, they combined data from 13 studies conducted in North and South America, Europe and Japan. In particular, they contained data on 9,000 patients with tumors of the oral cavity, pharynx, as well as 12 thousand people without such oncological diseases. In their work, American researchers paid attention to diseases or bleeding gums, lack of teeth, daily brushing of teeth, visits to the dentist at least once a year, as well as the presence of dentures in a person.

According to the results of the work, it turned out that people who lost less than 5 teeth visited the dentist once a year, brushed their teeth every day and who did not have gum diseases, were less at risk of getting malignant tumors of the head and neck than others. The researchers did not find a link between tumors and wearing dentures. The results of the study were published in the journal the Annals of Oncology.

Meanwhile, some experts clarify that neck and head cancer is associated with smoking and smokers, who often do not follow oral hygiene well. Therefore, it is possible that the development of these cancers may be caused by smoking, and not by a lack of concern for dental health.

The authors of the study noted that half of its participants had never gone to the dentist or rarely went, about 11% did not brush their teeth at least once a day. At the same time, they stressed that the practice that is useful for health and teeth can be started at any time.
