Guys! Take off your ties!

Ties pose a serious threat to men's healthNatalia Book, Утро.иа

It seems that men who hate the dress code can breathe easy - if you believe the rumors, they will have a good reason to justify their dislike of ties.

Rumor makers claim: this piece of clothing is a "hangout" of a huge number of microbes. After all, ties are very rarely washed or cleaned. They also cite the results of a study by a certain New York doctor who "studied" 42 ties of his colleagues, and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria were found on every fourth of them, causing heart, lung and skin diseases, and almost unresponsive to antibiotics.

According to rumors, a special instruction for Western doctors prohibiting the wearing of ties will soon be developed. According to research published by the Guardian newspaper, in 47% of cases, the ties of medical personnel are simply teeming with bacteria.

"Studies have clearly shown us what a surprise a personable, well–dressed doctor can present to a patient," was the comment of Stephen Nurkin, an employee of the New York Medical Center, who presented the results of the research at a meeting of the American Society of Microbiology in New Orleans.

The heads of departments and the administration of clinics, as a rule, encourage the habit of staff to the classic style of clothing and, as it turned out, thus contribute to the spread of infection. "As long as there is no direct evidence confirming that wearing ties by doctors increases the risk of infection of patients, there is no reason to fear. However, these data should be taken into account," they say.

The data provided is not an official statement. Health authorities are more puzzled by the problems of developing and implementing fundamental hygiene products to combat infections resistant to antibiotics. And this information so far only serves as an additional reminder to both medical staff and patients about the basic rules of hand hygiene.

Well, what about office workers, officials and politicians? If scientists continue their "stranglehold" research, perhaps in the foreseeable future we will more often see presidents in sweaters and shirts with the collar unbuttoned. Or – in some special disposable ties.

Meanwhile, another group of scientists came to the conclusion that a tie tied too tightly can increase the risk of blindness.

In a study conducted in New York, experts measured the fluid pressure in the eyeballs of a small number of men before and after they put on ties.

As a result, scientists have found out that the pressure increases significantly, and therefore they warn that wearing a tightly tied tie for a long enough time can cause glaucoma. The risk of glaucoma occurs when an increase in pressure can cause damage to the eye. In its most common form, glaucoma affects about 1% of the British population over the age of 50. This disease is the most common cause of incurable blindness in the world.

Researchers from the New York Eye and Ear Clinic tested 40 men, half of whom were completely healthy, and the other half had already been diagnosed with glaucoma by that time. Specialists measured their intraocular pressure, and then asked them to put on a tie for three minutes, and in such a way that the subjects felt "some inconvenience."

After that, the measurements were repeated. In 60% of patients with glaucoma and 70% of healthy men, a significant increase in fluid pressure in the eyeball was detected. As soon as the tie was removed from the neck of the subject, the pressure returned to normal.

Experts believe that a tie can cause this problem because it squeezes the cervical vein, the main vessel through which blood returns from the head to the heart. In addition, doctors say, such an increase in pressure sometimes leads to the fact that quite healthy people are mistakenly diagnosed with glaucoma.

In an article published by the British Journal of Ophthalmology, scientists write: "A tie can be considered one of the risk factors for those men who prefer to tie it tight, as well as men with thick necks and white–collar professionals.
