The usefulness of statins turned out to be exaggerated

Statins are useless in the primary prevention of heart diseaseABC Magazine
A meta-analysis of previously published studies found no evidence that statins reduce mortality among people at risk but not yet suffering from cardiovascular diseases.

Statins are one of the most popular drugs for the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases among patients with an already established diagnosis and among citizens at risk. It is believed that statins not only prevent the development of atherosclerosis, but also reduce mortality from coronary heart disease. Some studies also prove that statins generally increase life expectancy, regardless of whether the patient suffers from heart disease. This fact, along with the recorded cases of side effects from taking statins, led scientists to believe that the idea of primary prevention of heart diseases with their help may be erroneous.

Meta-analysis (Statins and All-Cause Mortality in High-Risk Primary Prevention: A Meta-analysis of 11 Randomized Controlled Trials Involving 65,229 Participants – Archives of Internal Medicine, Vol. 170 No. 12, June 28, 2010) combined data from 11 studies, in which a total of 65,229 took part 32,623 study participants took statins, and 32,606 received placebo. Over the course of 3.7 years, 2,793 people died, including 1,447 participants from the placebo group and 1,346 people who received statins. Thus, it has been proven that taking statins does not significantly reduce mortality.

"Bad" cholesterol (LDL) in the study participants who took placebo, it was higher than in the second group (134 mg / dl versus 94 mg/dl). But there was no connection between mortality in both groups and LDL levels at the initial stage or during the reduction of the average LDL level.

The current guidelines for prevention approve statin therapy as a means of reducing the risk of death of patients at risk for cardiovascular diseases. The results of the meta-analysis demonstrate the need to limit the popularization of statins among the rest of the population.
