Risks of mortality from coronary insufficiency (left) and all cardiovascular diseases (right) depending on work stress (WS) and sleep disorders (IS) per 1000 people per year - VM.

In a study published in the journal of the European Society of Cardiology, the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, scientists analyzed data (for 18 years) of 1959 able-bodied people aged 25 to 60 years who suffered from diabetes or high blood pressure. It turned out that hypertension combined with lack of sleep and stress increases the likelihood of heart disease three times. The factor of nervous overstrain alone leads to an increase in risk by 1.6 times, and poor sleep – by 1.8 times. With the addition of other factors, the danger increased.

The scientists explained that "stress at work" refers to situations in which high demands are placed on employees, and they lack the authority to make decisions. Describing "inadequate sleep", the author of the study, professor of the Medical Faculty of the Technical University of Munich Karl-Heinz Ladwig, noted that problems with falling asleep are directly related to stress.

"The problem is developing gradually. One difficult day without sleep does not pose a danger, but hard work and lack of sleep for many years drains the body's resources, which can eventually end in an early death for a person," said Ladwig.

The scientific work provides several ways to manage stress. For example, employees are advised to be distracted from business for five to ten minutes, play sports in their free time, monitor the dynamics of weight and other visible indicators of the body's work, as well as establish social connections.
