A doctor explained why mental illnesses worsen in springtime
The exacerbation of mental illnesses in spring may be influenced by changes in the concentration of some biological substances in the body, said psychiatrist Alina Slavnova. According to her, serotonin, dopamine, noradrenaline are responsible for the psychological well-being of a person. In spring, the daylight hours increase, more vitamin D comes in, which means that these substances are produced by the body in an increased volume.
People with no mental pathology tolerate this process absolutely normally, they do not feel anything. But if a person has some disorders - endogenous mental illnesses, then, of course, in the absence of adequate psychopharmacotherapy can occur their exacerbations, says Slavnova.
She explained that endogenous mental illnesses include, for example, bipolar affective disorder, schizophrenia, schizotypal disorder.
The doctor also emphasized that exacerbations in people with these ailments can occur not only in the spring, but in any of the other time periods, it's just that seasonality and vitamin D can trigger the process.
"Every mental disorder has a biopsychosocial nature, so a change in any one area will not lead to a catastrophe, but it can affect, so to speak, become a kind of last straw," Slavnova concluded.
